Asphalt Plants: An Explanation

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection maintains a database of all asphalt plants in the state.

In Connecticut, there are 49 asphalt plants that are permitted to operate.

Asphalt plants emit pollutants that are known to aggravate respiratory problems, cause cancer, and reduce lung function.

In 1998, the Connecticut legislature passed a two-year moratorium on new asphalt plants because the health risks associated with asphalt plants are not known. And, the legislature prohibited companies from siting asphalt plants within one-third of a mile of schools, homes, rivers and lakes, hospitals, nursing homes, and other areas of environmental concern.
