Potential Superfund Sites: An Explanation

The Superfund program is the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) program to cleanup the most seriously contaminated hazardous waste sites in the country. These are the sites that pose the greatest threat to human health and the environment.

The National Priority List (NPL) is a list of the nation's most seriously contaminated sites. There are approximately 1,200 NPL sites. 14 of these sites are in Connecticut.

Additionally, there are 1,789 sites that are so contaminated that they could be listed on the National Priority list. These are the Potential Superfund Sites. There are more Potential Superfund Sites (290) in Connecticut than any other state in the nation.
