Closed Landfills: An Explanation

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) maintains a record of all landfills in the state that have been closed and are not allowed to accept waste. These are closed landfills.

In the entire state, there are 264 landfills that have been closed.

This list comes from the Connecticut DEP list of closed landfill sites which was last revised in April 1999. This list does not include illegal landfills. It is important to note that although a landfill is closed, it may still pose a threat to the environment. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, all landfills can be expected to eventually leak.

These following types of waste have been dumped in Connecticut's closed landfills: municipal trash, bulky waste, industrial waste, incinerator ash, special waste, sewage sludge, dredge spoils, and, metal hydroxide sludge.
