Fossil Fuel Power Plants: An Explanation

The Connecticut Siting Council maintains a list of all power plants in the state.

In Connecticut, there are 47 fossil fuel plants that are permitted to operate. These include plants that burn coal, oil, wood, and natural gas.

The state's five dirtiest plants, "The Filthy Five," have never been forced to meet current clean air standards because of an exemption in the Clean Air Act. As a result, they are allowed to emit more than 2-3 times the pollution of a plant that meets current standards.
