Hazardous Waste Sites: An Explanation

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is required, by law, to maintain an inventory of sites which have been used for toxic or hazarous waste disposal. This inventory is used to identify sites which have been used for disposal in order to prioritize them for the implementation of appropriate clean-up measures.

This inventory is called the site discovery and assessment database. There are 3,322 hazardous waste sites on the database.

The DEP sends the following caveat with the site assessment database:

"Please note that the presence or abscence of a particular site on this database does not necessarily indicate whether there are or are not environmental problems at the site. The information on this database has not been reviewed for accuracy and can reasonably be expected to contain errors. A significant number of the sites listed on this database have not been investigated to confirm whether or not contamination exists. The Department is not responsible for any inaccuracies contained in the data base and makes no representation as to the truth or reliability of unconfirmed information."
