Toxics Action Center
At Toxics Action Center, we believe that everyone has the right to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and live in a healthy community. Our mission is to work side by side with New England residents to build strong groups to prevent and clean up toxics, while developing long-term leaders for the environmental movement. Since 1987, Toxics Action Center has assisted more than 700 community groups working to prevent and clean up toxic pollution in their communities.
Maine’s current system of pest management is failing to protect children’s health. Right now toxic pesticides are being sprayed on the lawns and fields where our children spend most of their time – at school. Toxics Action Center Campaigns is launching a campaign to ban the use of toxic pesticides on public school lawns, playgrounds, and athletic fields.
Responsibilities
· Research, compile and release the results of a survey all K-12 public schools in Maine regarding their use of pesticides.
· Expand our coalition of supporters to include educators, school athletic directors, and organic landscapers.
· Assist our community organizing staff by working side-by-side with 3-5 communities to pass local pesticide-free ordinances.
· Hold regular office hours and planning meetings with staff
Skills Required
· Commitment to environmental issues and social change
· Strong research and communication skills
· Willingness to jump on the phone
· No specific experience required, but must learn quickly and work efficiently
